Vogue; Fenty Beauty’s Campaign Is Rihanna’s Celebration of Diversity

This afternoon, Rihanna
released the official campaign video for her Fenty Beauty line, her
first custom collection of cosmetics, which is set to launch globally on
September 8. The ad features Duckie Thot, Halima Aden,
Slick Woods, Indyamarie Jean, and other models of color strutting down
city streets, as if they’re the only girls in the world (while applying lip-gloss, of course). Many have since applauded Rihanna for her embrace
of diverse beauty ideals (though admittedly, the models still look young
and sample-sized), while the ad itself seems to promise that there will
be a product for every shade of skin.

While it would be easy to believe that one of the most recognizable
style icons and sex symbols of our time—who has often defined what most
consider beautiful—would not have to worry about expanding on diversity,
the star has had to endure her own share of body-shaming in the past
months. Even though most women regularly shift in size, one sports
website responded to Rihanna’s changing body with a since-deleted
article titled, “Is Rihanna Going to Make Being Fat the Hot New Trend?”
while some comments on the star’s Instagram posts echoed similar
sentiments. Many jumped to the bad gal’s defense, but Rihanna wouldn’t
be Rihanna if she didn’t have the perfect retort
already. In one single Instagram meme, she fought back her body-shamers
with wit, while highlighting how male bodies would never fall under the
same scrutiny. The post punt it bluntly, “If you can’t handle me at my
2007 Gucci Mane, you don’t deserve me at my 2017 Gucci Mane.”

Rihanna has been working on Fenty Beauty
for quite some time (first reports of the project emerged around April
2016), but the line’s release seems to come at a perfect time for the
singer: if anything, it continues to be the bad gal’s quest so expand
how beauty is defined.
